Henan Province
Henan Province (in simplified Chinese 河南) is one of the provinces in China
which are having relatively rapid economic development. From 2004 to 2008, the
total GDP of this province has been retaining its position as the fifth in
China. After 29 years from 1979, in 2007, according to the absolute values, the
total GDP for 2007 was 43 times that that in 1979. According to constant price
projections, the average annual GDP growth rate was 10.9 percent, and this rate
was the 7th in China, just after regions like Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu and other
provinces and regions. From 1978 to 2008, there were 17 years in which the GDP
growth rate was higher than 10%. GDP growth was highest in 1983, having an
annual growth rate of 23.8%.
The agricultural economy of Henan province contributed to a large proportion of
the total economy. The proportion of agricultural economy in total economy in
Henan was second in China, only after Shandong Province. Since 1978 the total
GDP of Henan Province has been ranked top 9, and in 2004 it rose to rank no. 5.
Henan Province in 1991 exceeded 100 billion dollar in term of total GDP and in
2004 it exceeded 1 trillion yuan. All these statistics show that Henan Province
is growing more and more rapidly and there are a lot of potential for the
province to grow in the foreseeable future. It is also believed that this
province would be the top 3 provinces in the next decades because there would be
a shift of focus on development of secondary and tertiary industry.
In fact, Henan is China's major production base of grain and cotton, wheat,
tobacco and sesame production. The production of these products ranked the first
in China. The province's total grain output in 2007 reached 104.9 billion kg,
which ranked the first in China for 8 years. These help solve the food problem
of the province so that it would not prevent the province from further
development.
When the future comes, Henan is expected to be more and more prosperous.
